Novartis says FDA gave accelerated approval to Agriflu seasonal flu vaccine in adults over 18

NEW YORK (AP) -- The Food and Drug Administration said Friday it cleared Novartis' seasonal flu vaccine Agriflu for sale.

Agriflu is given as a single shot, and is approved for seasonal flu subtypes A and B in people age 18 and older. The FDA said it sped up the approval process and Novartis will be required to conduct more tests to show that Agriflu works.

In clinical trials, common side effects of Agriflu included pain, swelling and redness at the site of the injection, headache, muscle aches, and tiredness.

Novartis also makes the Fluvirin shot, which is approved for people over the age of 4.
