GATX never tried to unite Georgia and Texas, but the holding company does bring together some diverse businesses. After reorganizations and divestitures, the company operates three divisions: Rail (tank and freight car and locomotive leasing), Specialty (leases, affiliate investments, and loans), and American Steamship Company (a shipping company with a fleet of self-unloading ships operating on the Great Lakes). GATX owns, leases, or manages about 166,000 railcars, nearly three-quarters of which are deployed in North America, with the remainder in Europe. Rail is the company's biggest line of business; it owns or manages nearly 700 locomotives.
