Actelion walks a fine line. The company discovers and develops drugs based on its research of the endothelium, the single layer of cells between blood vessels and the blood that flows through them. The endothelium has been linked to such disorders as cancer and cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases. Actelion has two products on the market: Tracleer treats pulmonary arterial hypertension, and Zavesca treats Gaucher disease, a genetic metabolic disorder. Actelion has pulled the plug on Valetri, which failed to improve blood flow in acute heart failure patients. The company is also working on potential treatments for other cardiovascular conditions, cancer, and other disease targets.
