AvMed Health Plans is flying high in the Florida HMO world. The not-for-profit company is one of the state's leading HMOs (serving more than 200,000 members). AvMed designs policies for both small group and large employers throughout Florida; it also provides Medicare health plans for retirees in Miami-Dade and Broward counties in South Florida. Founded in 1969 as a health care system for pilots in the Miami area, AvMed (short for "aviation medicine") has broadened both its customer base and its product offering, introducing point-of-service (POS) plans and high-deductible plans with health savings accounts.
