Football fans failed to follow this league indoors. Before suspending operations, the Arena Football League (AFL) was the leading promoter of indoor football in the US. Following the same basic rules as traditional football, AFL teams played on a field only 50 yards long with only eight players per team on the field at a time. The AFL regulated franchise ownership, promoted its teams, and generated revenue from sponsorships and broadcasting rights. It also operated a minor league called arenafootball2. Founded with just four franchises in 1987, the AFL suspended operations indefinitely in 2009.
