Ball's Food Stores operates about 30 supermarkets in the Kansas City area under the Ball's Price Chopper and Hen House Market banners. Hen House Markets are upscale, service-oriented establishments, while Price Chopper is the company's price-impact supermarket format. Ball's Food Stores and rival Hy-Vee are leaders in the Kansas City market, but both grocery chains are facing increased pressure from supercenters operator Wal-Mart Stores, which is the largest seller of groceries in the US. Founded in 1923 by Sidney and Mollie Ball, the grocery company is run by their son Chairman Fred Ball and grandson David. The grocery chain is a member of Associated Wholesale Grocers.
