Revenue is generated from sales of advertising, as well as subscription charges for premium services. Tokyo-based technology investor SOFTBANK and US-based Internet portal Yahoo! jointly set up Yahoo Japan in 1996. SOFTBANK is Yahoo Japan's majority owner with a 40% stake. Yahoo! owns 33% of Yahoo Japan.
