AvalonBay Communities likes to go where the living is easy but the rules are strict. AvalonBay develops, acquires, refurbishes, leases, and manages apartment complexes. The real estate investment trust (REIT) focuses on upscale areas where low supplies of apartment-zoned land drives up demand and rent prices. AvalonBay owns about 170 apartment complexes containing more than 50,000 apartments in 10 states and Washington, DC. Most are branded under the Avalon name. Key markets include Boston and San Jose, California. Apartments are typically newer and upscale and offer such amenities as swimming pools, tennis courts, and patios; most are garden-style, but about three dozen are mid- or high-rise communities.
