When Altair Nanotechnologies paints the town, its pigment of choice is titanium dioxide (TiO2). The company produces titanium dioxide particles used in paints, coatings, and sensors. Altair intends to create new applications and products with its nanocrystalline technology. Its major development thus far has been its nano lithium Titanate battery materials, which offer superior performance, the company says, to other rechargeable batteries. The company tends to rely on just a few customers. Its largest in 2008 were the Office of Naval Research and the animal health unit of Eli Lilly, which combined accounted for more than half of Altair's sales that year.
